Central Asia needs full-fledged logistics infrastructure — EDB

Central Asian countries need to develop their own logistics infrastructure so that the region not only serves as a transit zone but also derives additional economic benefits from the movement of goods. Alexey Skatin, Senior Managing Director of the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB), said in Almaty during the session «Seamless Eurasia: Logistics at the Crossroads of Continents» held as part of the EDB Annual Meeting and Business Forum.

According to him, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan currently lack available warehouse space. At the same time, the EDB considers it important not only to develop transport corridors but also to create full-fledged logistics infrastructure, including warehouses and ports.

Alexey Skatin added that the three countries have zero warehouse vacancy and noted that warehouse capacity in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan remains insufficient.

He cited the German city of Duisburg as an example. Despite having no access to the sea, Duisburg has become a major logistics hub on the China—Europe railway route.
