The Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan has instructed state agencies and local authorities to assist energy companies in conducting public outreach among the population and businesses regarding the water accumulation situation in the Toktogul reservoir.
The provision is included in the government resolution on preparing the economy and population for the autumn-winter period of 2026/2027.
According to the document, ministries, local state administrations, City Halls, and local government bodies have to support energy companies in informing citizens through media outlets about the status of water reserves in the country’s main reservoir.
Previously, data on the water volume in Toktogul reservoir had been classified. Information that had been publicly released daily for many years by the energy authorities was removed from official reports. Authorities explained this decision by citing energy security concerns and the need to limit the dissemination of sensitive information about the country’s power system.
The Toktogul reservoir remains a key facility in Kyrgyzstan’s energy system. The volume of stored water directly affects the operation of the Toktogul hydropower plant, which generates a significant share of the country’s electricity.
Amid preparations for the upcoming heating season, authorities have also instructed compliance with electricity consumption limits, timely accumulation of coal reserves, and implementation of energy-saving measures.
