Import of seeds from third countries to EAEU exceeds $1 billion per year

In recent years, import of seeds from third countries to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) has exceeded $1 billion annually. Andrey Drobyshevsky, head of the Agricultural Markets Development Department of the Eurasian Economic Commission, announced during a round table.

According to him, the most import-dependent crops in terms of seeds are sunflower, corn and sugar beets. Import of saplings of fruit trees and seeds of vegetable crops accounts for about $200 million.

«At the same time, we have exports and mutual trade, which are significantly inferior to imports. We need to develop our own selection in this direction. For example, our export is focused on wheat seeds and seed potatoes,» Andrey Drobyshevsky said.
