In order to counter illegal migration, Germany began random checks at the borders with five more countries on September 16, resuming border controls on its entire land border. Interfax reported.

«It has thus expanded the control system already in place to four other land borders,» the news agency noted.

According to AP, the checks began Monday at the borders with France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Denmark. They will continue for at least six months.

In 2023, Germany introduced border control at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland.

The media outlet reminds that Germany last week announced the introduction of control measures at all its land borders in order to reduce illegal migration, as well as because of recent extremist attacks.

Earlier in September, a 29-year-old Albanian national with a machete attacked a police station in the German Linz am Rhein town — a day after an armed man opened fire on law enforcement officers in Munich. SWAT officers, who arrived on the scene, stunned him with a taser. Investigators searched the attacker’s apartment and found a flag of the terrorist group Islamic State painted on the wall.

In late August, a 26-year-old from Syria attacked people with a knife in the city of Solingen. Then three people were killed, eight were injured. After that, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that law enforcement authorities would increase the scale of deportation of foreigners illegally staying in Germany.
