Monument to Nursultan Nazarbayev dismantled in capital of Kazakhstan

A monument to the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, was dismantled in Astana near the National Defense University. The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported.

The military department explained this decision saying that the university had changed its name. Now it is named not after the first president of the country; its name is the National Defense University of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The monument is in temporary storage in one of the premises of the Defense Ministry, after which it will be installed in the building of the State Military History Museum of the Armed Forces.

The President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev previously pointed out Nursultan Nazarbayev’s guilt in the unrest in January 2022. According to him, the reason for the happened was an attempt to establish a system of dual power in the country after the Elbasy’s formal resignation from the post of president.

The monument was erected in July 2020.
