Kambar-Ata 1: EDB discusses participation in project with Cabinet of Ministers

«We are now actively discussing with the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan and the World Bank participation in the project for the construction of Kambarata HPP 1,» Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) Nikolai Podguzov told reporters.

According to him, the bank’s strategy involves a serious focus on water and energy projects. These are global projects related to the implementation of the water and energy potential of the countries of Central Asia. Among the most practical projects that the EDB has already started this year, Nikolai Podguzov named the construction of Kulanak hydroelectric power station.

«The Kambar-Ata 2 project is being financed through the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development. There are many projects in the field of renewable energy sources in all EDB member countries. In general, we intend to invest at least $400 million in this type of projects by 2026. But this is rather a modest estimate; it will be exceeded,» he noted.

The head of the EDB stressed that the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan is now making serious efforts to revive the construction project of Kambarata HPP 1 and accelerate it. To do this, first of all it is necessary to prepare a high-quality feasibility study of the project. It was previously done, but requires updating.

«Now we know the topic, we understand it well, and we are ready to take part in updating the feasibility study at the expense of the Technical Assistance Fund. Our partners from the World Bank have also identified this problem and are actively involved in it. I am sure that after some time this feasibility study will be born. And then there will be a serious process of forming a pool of investors who will implement this project. The progress is good. Let’s hope that through joint efforts we will be able to implement the project,» Nikolai Podguzov concluded.
