WHO allocates $3 million to support Turkey and Syria

The World Health Organization (WHO) has allocated $3 million from the Contingency Funding for Emergencies to support ongoing response efforts in the both countries. Website of the organization reports.

According to it, WHO sends medical supplies to help 400,000 people impacted by earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

The WHO has already delivered 72 tons of medical supplies to both countries.

 «In total, these life-saving supplies from both flights will be used to treat and care for 100,000 people as well as for 120,000 urgent surgical interventions in both countries,» the organization reported.

A third flight is scheduled to reach the Syrian Arab Republic on February 12 and expected to carry 37 metric tons of emergency health supplies to reach an additional 300,000 people.

«Survivors are facing freezing conditions, continuing aftershocks and very limited access to shelter, food, water, heat and medical care. We’re in a race against time to save lives,» said WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Two earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 hit southern Turkey on February 6 near Gaziantep city, where more than a million people live. Dozens of aftershocks were registered in Syria, Georgia and other countries.

The Turkish Embassy in Kyrgyzstan announced collection of humanitarian aid. A single deposit account has been opened in Kyrgyzstan to raise funds to help the victims. The number of victims of the earthquake in Turkey exceeded 20,000 people, more than 80,000 were injured. Nearly 4,000 people are reported dead in Syria.
