Turkey arrests architect of residential complex destroyed in earthquake

Turkey has detained Mehmet Yasar Coskun, a contractor for the construction of a 12-storey Renaissance residential complex destroyed by an earthquake in Antakya (Hatay province). RBK reports.

The man was stopped at the Istanbul airport with a large sum of money and a ticket to Montenegro.

The residential complex was completely destroyed as a result of the earthquake that occurred in Turkey on February 6. Judging by the footage released after the earthquake, the building toppled over to one side, hitting nearby buildings. According to rescuers, up to a thousand people could be under the rubble.

The number of victims of the earthquake in Turkey exceeded 20,000 people, more than 80,000 were injured. Nearly 4,000 people are reported dead in Syria.

Two earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 hit southern Turkey on February 6 near Gaziantep city, where more than a million people live. Dozens of aftershocks were registered in Syria, Georgia and other countries.

The Turkish Embassy in Kyrgyzstan announced collection of humanitarian aid. A single deposit account has been opened in Kyrgyzstan to raise funds to help the victims.
