Earthquake in Turkey and Syria: Death toll exceeds 16,000 people

The number of people killed in the earthquake in Turkey and Syria exceeded 16,000. CNN reports.

As a result of the quake in the south-east of Turkey, 12,873 people were killed, 62,937 people were injured, the country’s emergency department reported.

According to AFP, the death toll in Syria rose to 3,162, the number of injured is not specified. Thus, the total number of deaths in Turkey and Syria reached 16,035 people.

Two earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 hit southern Turkey on February 6 near Gaziantep city, where more than a million people live. Dozens of aftershocks were registered in Syria, Georgia and other countries.

The Turkish Embassy in Kyrgyzstan announced collection of humanitarian aid. A single deposit account has been opened in Kyrgyzstan to raise funds to help the victims.

Kyrgyzstan sent rescuers of the Ministry of Emergency Situations to Turkey.
