The U.S. Department of State reacted to the demonstrative detention of a well-known investigative journalist Bolot Temirov and akyn (poet) Bolot Nazarov in Kyrgyzstan.
The department posted on Twitter that Kyrgyzstan should remember its commitments to protect freedom of the press and not persecute journalists whose work helps to bring transparency to public affairs.This information was posted by the U.S. Embassy in Kyrgyzstan.
Police officers accompanied by special forces soldiers came to Temirov Live office in Bishkek on January 22. They detained Bolot Temirov and took him to the capital’s Department of Internal Affairs.
It became known that, along with Bolot Temirov, his colleague Bolot Nazarov was also detained. Both were released on their own recognizance not to leave the city.
Journalists associate the visit of the police officers with the professional activities of Temirov Live and the latest investigation into the fuel business of the family of the Chairman of the State Committee for National Security Kamchybek Tashiev.
