Internews in Kyrgyzstan calls on government agencies to conduct a full-fledged and effective investigation based on the facts mentioned in all journalistic investigations. Statement of the organization says.
"In 2019, the Kyrgyz media continued to publish high-profile investigations of corruption facts in various fields, which once again proved that this phenomenon has acquired a systemic nature, as many of the corruption violations occur when the authorities are passive and silent,” the statement says.
Recent high-profile investigations by Azattyk and Kloop Media about customs corruption schemes and land plots violations in the Ataturk park caused a huge public outcry. But citizens did not see an adequate reaction from the authorities again. Journalists of Kyrgyzstan bring together the international expertise the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and make a huge contribution to the fight against corruption.
"Internews in Kyrgyzstan calls on to ensure safety of journalists, who participated in the investigations. Representatives of the authorities should understand that it is their inaction, and sometimes their opposition to the activity of society that force citizens of the country to hold rallies demanding a real, fundamental fight against corruption. And this is the very priority that the president of the country has repeatedly stated,” the organization says.
