Kumtor case: All charges against ex-president of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev dropped

Former president of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev left for Moscow. Bekbolot Talgarbekov, an associate of the former head of state, informed 24.kg news agency.

According to him, all charges were dropped against the former head of state — the criminal case against Akayev was terminated due to the absence of corpus delicti. The investigation found that neither he nor his relatives took money from the Kumtor project.

«Askar Askayev does not have a single share in Centerra Gold Inc. In 2003, the government decided to create Centerra. The agreement was prepared by a state commission, which included Kyrgyzaltyn, government and parliament representatives, including Akylbek Japarov. The government only approved the agreement. Experts from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund reviewed the agreement before it was approved. They gave a positive conclusion. Askar Akayev earlier considered it an omission that he did not check it and trusted the state commission, he apologized to the people,» Bekbolot Talgarbekov said.

He noted that if any questions arise to Askar Akayev during the investigation of the criminal case, he could be summoned again for questioning as a witness.

Askar Akayev arrived in the capital again on December 14. He already came to Kyrgyzstan in August. After the interrogation by the SCNS, the former president entered into a plea bargain and made a confession. The second time he was also interrogated by the special services within the Kumtor case.
