At least 20 percent of the total number of marriages in Kyrgyzstan is registered because the bride was kidnapped. Ombudsman Tokon Mamytov announced this at a meeting of the Parliament.
According to him, thirteen criminal cases have been initiated on bride kidnapping.
The UN Committee urges the authorities of Kyrgyzstan to strengthen the legal mechanisms for preventing and investigating such crimes, to punish criminals, to compensate for moral damage to victims of abduction and related sexual violence.
Earlier, it was repeatedly proposed to toughen the punishment for forced marriage, especially if the girl is under 17. At the same time, only one person was convicted of kidnapping a bride in Kyrgyzstan.
