Finance Ministry of Kyrgyzstan to pay 200,000 soms to family of torture victim

The Ministry of Finance of Kyrgyzstan must pay 200,000 soms to the family of the deceased Turdubek Akmatov. His lawyer Sardarbek Abdukhallilov informed 24.kg news agency.

According to him, the judge of the Pervomaisky District Court Venera Zhanybek kyzy yesterday made a decision, which states that Turdubek Akmatov really died as a result of torture and his family must receive one-time compensation.

Turdubek Akmatov was summoned for interrogation on May 3, 2005 to the Uzgen District Department of Internal Affairs, and then detained. He had been interrogated for 10 hours. He was beaten by 6 police officers, then released. Turdubek Akmatov died of injuries that evening. A criminal case was opened under the article murder of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The investigation lasted until 2011. During this time, it was suspended six times. Guilty police officers were not prosecuted. The father of the deceased appealed to the UN Human Rights Committee. The court hearings resumed only in 2018. The brother of the killed, Chingiz, also filed a civil claim for compensation for non-pecuniary damage. The court ordered to pay the affected party 200,000 soms.
