A pilot project on the psychological rehabilitation of persons released from prison was launched in Bishkek. The regional office of the Penal Reform International in Central Asia reported.
It is noted that there are 10,500 convicts in Kyrgyzstan. The republic is the 91st out of 223 countries taking part in the world prison ranking. At least 500-600 convicts are released from places of imprisonment annually. Starting from 2019, the probation institute will work in the country as a mechanism for applying alternative measures not related to deprivation of liberty. This means that the Probation Service will work with the convicts sentenced to conditional sentences and the convicts, to whom parole and other humane acts have been applied.
«The Penal Reform International, in conjunction with the State Penitentiary Service, pays special attention to the reintegration of the convicts into society. One of these areas is the holding of events that contribute to the psychological preparedness of the released convicts to the changed realities of life. It is important to implement not just a project, but also a chosen social and useful direction. Classes with ex-convicts are held using art and music therapy methods. Experts suggest modern methods of preparing for life in society after being released from places of detention,» said Azamat Shambilov, the PRI Regional Director for Central Asia.
The participants and experts of the pilot art group study and practice the art therapeutic models and rehabilitation techniques that future probation service officers will be able to use as effective methods of resocialization.
