Police torture accounts for 90% of torture cases in Kyrgyzstan

Torture in the system of internal affairs bodies accounts for more than 90 percent of all torture cases in Kyrgyzstan. The Director of the National Center for Torture Prevention, Nurdin Sulaimanov, stated at the round table discussion «Dialogue between the State and Civil Society on Torture Prevention.»

According to him, people mostly complain about torture in Bishkek and Chui region.

«Torture in SCNS system accounts for 8 percent of cases, in the State Penitentiary Service — for one percent. Eight percent of respondents complained of torture and ill-treatment in Talas and Batken regions, 11 percent — in Osh and Osh region, and 13 percent — in Issyk-Kul region. The least of all torture complaints were registered in Naryn region — one percent of all respondents. In Bishkek, 39 percent of people complained of torture, and 18 percent of respondents — in Chui region,» Nurdin Sulaimanov told.
