Russia is strengthening military bases in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan because of the threat from Afghanistan. RIA Novosti reported referring to the Defense Minister of Russia Sergei Shoygu.
According to him, the bases are supplied with the latest weapons to prevent the transfer of terrorist activity from Afghanistan to Central Asia. With the same purpose, he said, assistance is provided to the armed forces of the Central Asian states, great attention is paid to improving their combat capabilities.
«We are increasing the combat readiness of Russian military bases in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, equipping them with modern weapons and military machinery,» said Sergei Shoygu, speaking at a meeting of SCO Defense Ministers in Astana.
In March, the minister recalled, Tajikistan hosted anti-terrorist command and staff exercises with the power structures of the republic. Similar exercises are planned for September with the participation of the national military contingents of CSTO countries.
