Lawsuits against media. Kyrgyz Ombudsman should stand up for journalists

Human rights defenders call on the Ombudsman of Kyrgyzstan Kubat Otorbaev to stand up for journalists. They sent him a letter with suggestions.

In their opinion, the Ombudsman should make a public statement on the situation with the restriction of freedom of speech and pressure on human rights defenders and journalists through multi-million claims and urge the authorities to stop pressure and give up on compensations.

International human rights bodies have repeatedly stated that the protection of honor and dignity, and especially of state and political figures, should not be reduced to the personal goal of enriching or harassing journalists.

Civil community of Kyrgyzstan

In addition, it is necessary to give a legal assessment to the draft law by Dastan Bekeshev on amendments to the Civil Code of the Kyrgyz Republic for its compliance with constitutional principles of freedom of speech and expression of opinion. It is aimed at restricting freedom of speech and in fact sets the minimum amount of fines for publishing unreliable information.

Earlier Sooronbai Jeenbekov withdrew material claims to 24.kg news agency. The public welcomed this step of the incumbent president calling him to give up on five million soms claim to journalist Kabay Karabekov.
