Kyrgyzstan must discharge its obligations on Kumtor

Kyrgyzstan must discharge its obligations on Kumtor. Expert in state administration Sheradil Baktygulov stated today at a roundtable discussion.

According to him, everything was mixed when raising Kumtor issue: both purchase of Thompson Creek and social problems. «We agreed to such an agreement and it means that we must discharge our obligations. Therefore, claims to international arbitration are not upheld. Now we have agreed on an increase in environmental charges. After the conclusion of the agreement, the company’s shares rose. This has a positive effect on the state of the enterprise itself,» Sheradil Baktygulov said.

He added that earlier Development Fund of Issyk-Kul Region was a personal pocket of the governor. Local residents did not get anything. Now we need to make it work for the region, not for one person.

Recall, the government of Kyrgyzstan and Centerra this week signed a new agreement on Kumtor gold mine.
