Almazbek Atambayev: Kumtor shouldn’t be subject of dirty political games

Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev discussed with the Prime Minister Sapar Isakov a new agreement on Kumtor. This was reported by the Information Policy Department of the Cabinet of Ministers.

According to it, today Almazbek Atambayev met with Sapar Isakov. During the meeting, the head of government told the president about the results of negotiations with the Canadian company Centerra Gold Inc. and the signed strategic agreement on environmental protection and investment development.

According to Sapar Isakov, as a result of the negotiations, conditions to improve the environmental situation of the Kumtor project are created and agreements on resolving environmental disputes have been reached.

The direct and indirect economic effect for Kyrgyzstan from the conclusion of a new agreement on Kumtor could amount to about $ 200 million.

The Head of State noted the special importance of protecting national interests in Kumtor project. He stressed that the results of the talks show the mutual desire of the parties to improve compliance with environmental standards at the gold mine.

«The government should ensure that Kumtor to stop being the subject of dirty political games and a factor of destabilization, but became a purely economic project that works effectively in the interests of the state and its citizens,» Almazbek Atambayev concluded.
