Astana Airport was renamed in honor of the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. The government decree was published in Kazakhstanskaya Pravda newspaper.
Nursultan Nazarbayev is the first and so far the only president of independent Kazakhstan. In fact, he has been ruling the country for 28 years — from June 22, 1989, when he was appointed to the post of the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan. Since April 1990, he is president of the Kazakh SSR. He has the official title of the Leader of the Nation (Elbasy). He is People’s Hero of Kazakhstan (2012).
