Antonio Guterres praises Kyrgyzstan's efforts to promote democracy

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted Kyrgyzstan's efforts in developing and promoting democracy. He stated this yesterday at a bilateral meeting with the Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev.

According to him, he sees the efforts of the Kyrgyz authorities in the effort to maintain and strengthen inter-ethnic accord. Recall, Antonio Guterres, being the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, came to Osh in June 2010, after the inter-ethnic conflict.

Antonio Guterres also stressed that he welcomes the intention of the Kyrgyz authorities to adhere to the basic tenets of democracy — the protection of human rights and respect for the law.

Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev added that he and Antonio Guterres had a good talk at the forum in Astana and noted that the trip to Osh for the UN Secretary-General would be successful.

Then Antonio Guterres flied to the southern capital of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The UN Secretary-General arrived in Kyrgyzstan in the framework of his Central Asian tour.
