One refugee from North Korea resides in Kyrgyzstan

One refugee from North Korea resides in Kyrgyzstan. Deputy Chairman of the State Migration Service Almaz Asanbayev stated at the meeting of Onuguu-Progress faction.

MP Iskhak Masaliyev asked how he got refugee status, because there is no war in North Korea.

According to Almaz Asanbayev, the refugee from North Korea came to Kyrgyzstan 20 years ago through Russia.

«Under the laws of North Korea, if its citizen escapes from the country and returns, he will face the death penalty," Almaz Asanbayev said.

According to the official, UNHCR has such notions as persecution and the threat to life, therefore, despite the absence of war in the homeland of the refugee, he was granted the appropriate status.

«The UNHCR allocates money for the refugee maintenance," the official said.
