The poor don’t benefit from low electricity tariffs, the economist of the World Bank office in Kyrgyzstan Bakyt Dubashov said today at a press conference.

According to him, about 6 percent of households' expenditures are energy resources payments.

Preferential tariffs are unfair. They benefit mainly the large consumers.

Subsidies are used by those who can pay at a higher rate. The rich receive 2.5 times more aid from the state.

«Vulnerable segments of the population don’t use these benefits in full. The energy sector is a key factor in fiscal stress. Tariff reform will be necessary under any scenario," Bakyt Dubashov said.
