English to become everyday subject for 5th graders in Kyrgyz schools

The Board of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic approved changes in the basic curriculum on increasing the hours for learning English language in the fifth grade.

According to the press service of the ministry, at present, English is taught in schools two hours a week, starting from the third grade.

«In the new school year, it is proposed to add three more hours in the fifth grade. An intensive learning of the English language will give positive results in three -four years. Computer science is also proposed to be learned in the fifth grade. Before that, schoolchildren began to learn the basics of IT a year later," the report said.

The draft resolution on increasing the hours for learning of English and computer science is only submitted to the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic.

«It has been scientifically proven that children who speak not only their native language receive higher scores in attestation, they have better developed memory and logical thinking. By the way, learning of the second language helps to better understand the native language, makes speech more correct. And the earlier the children learn English, the more opportunities they have in the future — both in admission to higher education institutions and employment," member of the board, director of the Finance Academy Svetlana Simbard said.

The Kyrgyz Academy of Education was instructed to make appropriate changes in state educational standards and develop a new curriculum. Refresher courses for teachers of English and computer science will be held, textbooks will be published before the beginning of the school year.
