Kyrgyzstan offers to give names of people to cities and villages

The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan considers amendments to the Law «On Geographical Names.»

According to the current version of the Law «On Geographical Names in the Kyrgyz Republic," the name and renaming of administrative-territorial units, local governments, cities, villages by the names of people is prohibited.

A number of deputies propose to provide exceptions. Villages can be given the names of persons directly involved in the discovery, study, mastering of geographical objects, as well as outstanding state and public figures, representatives of science and culture, who have merit to the state.

Naming and renaming of villages is also permitted by the names of historical figures. An exception is provided for the purpose of returning to individual objects lost, but widely known in the past and present geographical names.

If the bill is adopted, it will be possible to perpetuate the memory of S.Karalayev, B.Alykulov, Ch. Aitmatov, S.Zhigitov, A.Osmonov, U.Saliyeva, B.Beyshenalieva and others.

According to the law, all expenses associated with the name and renaming of the geographic objects of the Kyrgyz Republic are made at the expense of the budget of the local government body in whose territory these objects are located.
