National Bank of Kyrgyzstan sells $196.2 million to stabilize market
The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic conducted its tenth foreign exchange intervention since the beginning of 2026. On August 10, it sold $196.2 million on the market.
According to the regulator’s official data, the operation was conducted in two stages:
- $41 million was sold with settlement on the transaction date;
- $155.2 million was sold with settlement on a date other than the transaction date.
The August intervention was the second largest this year. The largest currency sale was recorded on June 29 ($222.55 million), while the previous intervention took place on July 14, when the National Bank sold $186.4 million.
Including this latest operation, the total volume of foreign exchange sold by the National Bank since the beginning of the year has reached $1,668.8 billion. No dollar purchases have been conducted this year.
The National Bank previously explained that the increase in foreign exchange interventions was due to growing demand from businesses and the replenishment of a temporary supply deficit in the domestic market, rather than attempts to regulate the national currency exchange rate. Kyrgyzstan continues to adhere to a floating exchange rate regime, and the regulator’s international reserves remain sufficient to smooth out sharp fluctuations.
- In 2025, the National Bank conducted eight foreign exchange interventions. A total of $853 million was sold on the market. The regulator did not conduct any purchases.
- In 2024, it conducted 26 transactions on the foreign exchange market: 13 to buy dollars (369.35 million) and 13 to sell them (675.65 million).
- In 2023, the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic sold $655.72 million on the foreign exchange market.
