New waste-to-energy plants are being built in Uzbekistan’s regions. These plants will not only reduce landfill volumes but also generate electricity from waste, Podrobno.uz reports.

According to the Agency for Waste Management and Circular Economy Development, six plants are being built in Andijan, Namangan, Fergana, Samarkand, Kashkadarya, and Tashkent regions at a total cost of $933 million. They will annually process up to 3.6 million tons of waste and generate approximately 1.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. Construction of five more plants is being launched, costing $633 million.

One of the key facilities, a plant in Samarkand, is scheduled to begin operations in early 2027. Its capacity will be up to 1,500 tons per day, and annual electricity generation will reach 240 million kilowatt-hours.

Bishkek was the first in Central Asia to build a waste-to-energy plant. Its experience has been studied by Belarus and Tajikistan.
