A total of 554 infants under 12 months old died in Kyrgyzstan between January and April 2026, a report by the National Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan says.

According to the committee, 570 infant deaths were recorded during the same period in 2025.

The main causes of infant mortality during the reporting period were conditions arising in the perinatal period, which accounted for 363 deaths (66 percent of the total), congenital malformations, which caused the deaths of 99 newborns (18 percent), and respiratory diseases, which claimed the lives of 56 children (10 percent).

Earlier, the Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan announced a reform of the country’s perinatal care system through 2030.

Key priorities of the reform include:

  • improving the monitoring system for pregnant women and patient referral pathways;
  • revising antenatal care standards with a stronger focus on quality of medical services;
  • introducing modern prenatal screening technologies;
  • establishing a genetic laboratory;
  • expanding family planning services.
