The 64th session of the Subsidiary Bodies of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has opened in Bonn, Germany, to prepare decisions for the upcoming COP31 climate conference in Turkey.
Kyrgyzstan is represented at the negotiations by a delegation led by Dinara Kemelova, the President’s Special Representative on the Mountain Agenda.
According to Kemelova, mountain regions play a crucial role in ensuring water, food, and energy security, yet remain among the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
At a thematic event on glaciers and the cryosphere, she presented Kyrgyzstan’s initiatives aimed at glacier preservation and the development of international cooperation in glaciology.
International experts presented glacier melt scenarios, one of which predicts that the Abramov Glacier in Kyrgyzstan could disappear completely by 2100 if global temperatures rise by 2.7 degrees Celsius.
During the conference, the Kyrgyz delegation also held talks with UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, representatives of Turkey and Australia, and officials from the Convention’s Subsidiary Bodies. The parties discussed the promotion of the mountain agenda, glacier preservation, water security, and the sustainable development of mountain communities.
In addition, the Mountain Group invited conference participants to the International Dialogue on Mountain Regions and Climate Change, which will take place in Bonn on June 12.
