The Parliament of Moldova voted to denounce key agreements with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), allowing the country to leave the organization, Meduza reports.
At least 60 of 101 deputies voted in favor of the relevant laws. Deputies from the Communist Party and the Socialist Party voted against. They believe that Moldova’s withdrawal from the CIS «will have catastrophic consequences» for the country’s economy.
The adopted laws should then be signed by the President of Moldova. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will then submit all documents to the CIS Executive Committee. The country will finally leave the organization 12 months after that.
The Moldovan authorities first announced their plans to leave the CIS in December 2023, after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moldova’s participation in the CIS «has little value»: «Let them do whatever they want.»
In previous years, Georgia (in 2008) and Ukraine (in 2018) left the CIS.
