China’s Ministry of Agriculture reported outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in two cattle herds in the northwestern province of Gansu and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Reuters reports.
On Saturday, the government confirmed the SAT1 serotype of foot-and-mouth disease in 219 head of cattle across two herds totaling 6,229 animals.
Local authorities in Xinjiang and Gansu have taken measures to cull infected animals and carry out disinfection.
Industry analysts say this is the first recorded incursion of the SAT1 serotype into China, and that existing vaccines there do not provide cross-protection against this strain.
