Kyrgyz Ombudsperson speaks about early marriage prevention in Minsk

Kyrgyzstan’s Ombudsperson delivered three reports at a meeting of the CIS Human Rights Commission held in Minsk, the press service of the Ombudsman’s Institute reported.

Jamilya Jamanbaeva spoke about the observance of Kyrgyzstanis’ rights to medical care and assistance. She noted that 32 monitoring sessions were conducted at medical facilities last year, with 17 response reports sent to government agencies. As a result, hospitals were renovated, meals were improved, and medical equipment was updated.

The Ombudsperson also told about the country’s experience in preventing early marriage.

«The legal age for marriage in the country is 18. Despite this, there are cases of early and forced marriages conducted through the religious Nikah rite. We need to strengthen prevention and legal education of the population,» she noted.

Colleagues were also informed about the implementation of the Human Rights Index methodology.
