Russia is introducing a GOST standard for potato chips for the first time, effective April 1, 2026. Six post-Soviet countries, including Kyrgyzstan, have adopted the standard, the press service of Rosstandart reported.

Potato chips are a widely popular snack, but until now there was no document establishing uniform requirements for the product.

The new interstate standard applies to chips made from natural potatoes or processed potato products using thermal treatment or extrusion methods, baked or fried with or without oil, with or without added food ingredients and additives, hermetically packed for direct consumption.

The GOST also defines chip characteristics such as appearance, color, taste, and odor, as well as the permissible fat and salt content.

Chips produced according to the standard must be crispy, crumbly, and retain the characteristic taste and aroma of the product, with a noticeable scent of flavoring or aromatic additives. In chips made from natural potatoes, fat content must not exceed 45 percent, while chips made from processed potato products or semi-finished potato products must contain no more than 35 percent fat.

In addition to Kyrgyzstan, the standard has been adopted by Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
