Activist deported from Kyrgyzstan sentenced to 16 years in prison in Russia

Anti-war activist Alexey Rozhkov was sentenced to 16 years in prison in Yekaterinburg. Mediazona reported.

The man was found guilty of setting fire to a military registration and enlistment office, justifying terrorism, and spreading fake news about the Russian army. He will spend the first five years in prison, and the rest of the time — in a maximum-security penal colony.

Alexey Rozhkov set fire to a military registration and enlistment office in Berezovsky in March 2022 as a protest against the war. Then he threw Molotov cocktails and left a peace symbol on the fence. After his arrest, the activist was released on his own recognizance, and he left for Bishkek.

A year later, in May 2023, he was detained by security forces of Kyrgyzstan and deported to Russia. Alexey Rozhkov said in court that he was tortured upon arrival in Yekaterinburg.

According to investigators, the new charges are based on an interview he gave in Kyrgyzstan. In it, the man condemned the war and explained the motives behind his anti-war protest.

The Kyrgyz Republic has not officially commented on the extradition of Alexey Rozhkov.
