Parliament of Kyrgyzstan approves loan and grant from EBRD for water supply

The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan approved in the third reading a bill on the ratification of agreements between Kyrgyzstan and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), under which Kyrgyzstan will receive €17 million to improve water supply and sewerage systems in Shopokov, Kemin and Talas cities.

The background statement to the bill says that €7.6 million of this amount will be provided as a loan for 15 years with a four-year grace period. The interest rate on the loan is 1 percent and the Euribor rate. EBRD will provide another €7.6 million as a grant. At least €1.8 million will be spent on technical cooperation.

The money will be used to replace old water supply pipes, install meters, modernize treatment facilities and build new ones. In Talas, in particular, it is planned to build a modern wastewater treatment plant.

The project is designed for four years and will provide more than 19,000 people in Shopokov and Kemin with safe drinking water, as well as modernize the sewerage system for 19,000 residents of Talas.
