Kyrgyzstan to toughen penalties for drunk driving

It is again proposed to toughen penalties for drunk driving in Kyrgyzstan. Baikazy Atikul uulu, head of the press service of the Main Traffic Safety Department, told 24.kg news agency.

According to him, the relevant document has been developed and already submitted for public discussion by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic.

According to the current legislation, a driver is deprived of his or her driving license for one year for driving under the influence of alcohol. The Ministry of Internal Affairs proposes to deprive of the license for two years. In case of repeated violation, the drivers may be deprived of their driving licenses for four years. In addition, the vehicle of the violator will be temporarily confiscated.

«A new punishment is also provided for those drivers, who refuse to undergo medical examination in narcology — deprivation of a driving license for two years. Arrest for three days is now provided for refusal of examination,» Aitikul uulu said.

The amendments to the bill also provide for a 10-day arrest for driving a car while intoxicated and without a driving license. However, the arrest will not be applied to people with disabilities of groups I and II, pregnant women, women over 55, and men over 60. They will be fined 20,000 soms.

In addition, the bill provides for a 10-day detention for citizens, who drive a car while intoxicated without a driving license or without a driving license at all. At the same time, men over 60, women over 55, people with disabilities of groups I and II, as well as pregnant women will not be detained for this violation, but will be fined 20,000 soms.
