There are about 550 landfills in Kyrgyzstan, and only about 60 of them are official, authorized. Almaz Oskonbaev, chief specialist at the Waste Management Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision, told at a forum.

According to him, even many authorized landfills do not have title documents and are not transformed into the necessary category of land. Most landfills are located on agricultural land, do not meet sanitary and environmental requirements, are not fenced, and there is no record of waste.

Partial sorting is carried out at some waste disposal sites, mainly of plastic and cardboard. Some hazardous types of waste (medical, construction and others) get directly to landfills due to the lack of recycling system.

There are about 100 recyclers in the waste processing system in the country, most of them (56 enterprises) are located in Bishkek.
