New Prime Minister of Japan Shigeru Ishiba supports the idea of setting up an Asian version of NATO. The Associated Press reported.
World media also report that Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya said that the idea of creating an «Asian version of NATO» and a collective security architecture in the region is one of the options for the future.
«I think the most important thing is to build a multi-level network of relations with like-minded countries and allies,» he said.
In his opinion, an Asian version of NATO is one of the ideas for the future.
«It will take time to consider it, it needs to be studied in the medium and long term,» the head of the Foreign Ministry of Japan added.
According to him, the situation around Japan is now the most severe since the war.
«I think the most important thing now is to build a multi-level network of relations with like-minded countries and allies. We would like to increase our deterrence potential in this way,» Takeshi Iwaya added.

Shigeru Ishiba was elected Chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on September 27 and is known as one of the most experienced politicians in Japan. Previously, he held the posts of Minister of Defense, Minister of Agriculture, and Minister for Local Economic Revitalization.
