Total electricity losses in 2023 reached 2.5 billion kilowatt-hours

In 2023, enterprises in the energy sector of Kyrgyzstan produced 13.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which is 0.3 percent less than in 2022. Hydropower plants continued to be the main source of generation, accounting for about 87 percent of all electricity generated. The National Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan reported.

The total electricity consumption in the republic last year amounted to 17.2 billion kilowatt-hours. At the same time, the volume of exported electricity amounted to only 138.4 million kilowatt-hours, which is 74.8 percent less than in 2022. The use of electricity for own production and economic needs also decreased by 19.6 percent, amounting to 106 million kilowatt-hours.

Despite the overall decline, there is an increase in consumption in a number of sectors:

  • Education sector increased electricity consumption by 14.4 percent;
  • Agriculture, including household consumption of the rural population, grew by 10.4 percent;
  • Construction required 9.2 percent more electricity;
  • Hospitality industry showed an increase of 8.2 percent;
  • Industry increased consumption by 8 percent.

Electricity consumption in the transport and communications sector decreased by 13.4 percent, and in wholesale and retail trade, including the repair of vehicles and household goods, — by 9.8 percent.

Total electricity losses in 2023 reached 2.5 billion kilowatt-hours. Industry accounted for a half of the consumed electricity, agriculture — for 21.3 percent, and the share of other industries made up 13.8 percent.
