The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan at its meeting decided to refuse the request of fugitive president Askar Akayev to return the status of ex-president to him.

The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan received a letter from Askar Akayev on returning the status of ex-president to him on September 3. The letter was sent for consideration to the Committee on Constitutional Legislation, State Structure, Judicial, Legal Issues and Regulations of the Parliament, and its members recommended deputies to deny the request. Deputies supported the committee’s proposal.

Askar Akayev ruled the country from 1990 to 2005. On March 24, 2005, he was overthrown as a result of the so-called Tulip Revolution against the family, authoritarian and corrupt government. Akayev then left the Kyrgyz Republic and has been living in Russia ever since.
