The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Akylbek Japarov held a meeting on the elimination of consequences of mudflows that occurred in different regions of the country over the first nine months of 2024. The press service of the Cabinet reported.
During the meeting, not only current problems were discussed, but also long-term strategies to prevent similar disasters in the future.
According to information provided at the meeting by the Minister of Emergency Situations Boobek Azhikeyev, 331 cases of mudflows were recorded in Kyrgyzstan as of September 2024, as a result of which 5,354 houses were damaged. At least 102 of them were damaged, and 138 require major repairs. These events highlight the need for more effective risk management of natural disasters.
The head of the Cabinet of Ministers set the task for the relevant government agencies to insure all houses, including those located in risk zones, by the end of 2024.
«This will ensure financial protection for citizens in the event of a recurrence of such situations and minimize the consequences for families who have lost their housing. Insurance will become an important tool that will help people recover more quickly from natural disasters and reduce the burden on the state budget,» the statement says.
Akylbek Japarov emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to solving the problem of mudflows. He pointed out the need to strengthen river banks, carry out preventive measures, such as cleaning reservoirs and creating drainage systems, as well as raising public awareness of safety measures in the event of a mudflow threat. He also instructed to organize information campaigns for local residents so that they know how to act in emergency situations.
The head of the Cabinet noted that every year, due to global warming, the number of natural disasters will only increase. In this regard, real estate insurance becomes a necessary measure to ensure the safety and resilience of the population to the consequences of natural disasters.
