Children of foreigners born in Kyrgyzstan will not be granted local citizenship. The Ministry of Digital Development proposed to amend the Law «On Citizenship of the Kyrgyz Republic».
At a meeting of the Committee on International Affairs, Defense, Security and Migration of the Parliament, deputy Ulan Primov noted that the Prosecutor General’s Office had given a negative opinion on this initiative.
Deputy Director of the Population Registration Department Bekzat Ibraimov responded that it is proposed to grant citizenship of Kyrgyzstan not based on jus sanguinis principle. The bill proposes to grant citizenship to children born in Kyrgyzstan, whose parents or only parent are ethnic Kyrgyz," he said.
According to the current law, a child born on the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic, both parents or only parent of whom are foreigners, becomes a citizen of the Kyrgyz Republic, if the state of the parents or sole guardian does not grant citizenship to the child.
The bill also proposes to supplement Article 25 with a basis for refusing a person to renounce citizenship of Kyrgyzstan if this contradicts the interests of the country’s national security.
The deputies adopted the document in the first reading.
