Rosatom will continue rehabilitation of territories in Kyrgyzstan, the press service of the state corporation reports. The corresponding contract was signed by the Experimental and Demonstration Center for Decommissioning of Uranium-Graphite Reactors JSC (an enterprise of Environmental Solutions division of Rosatom).
The contract provides for a set of works on creation of engineering and technical service systems, which will allow in 2025 to start rehabilitation of the industrial complex in Kadzhi-Sai village of Issyk-Kul region, the mountain dump Too-Moyun in Nookat district of Osh region and the mountain dump in Kyzyl-Zhar village of Jalal-Abad region. The work is planned to be carried out entirely at the expense of the Russian Federation.
«After the collapse of the USSR, most of the storage facilities in the Kyrgyz Republic fell into emergency condition and posed a danger to the environment. For seven years of work Rosatom has already rehabilitated several tailing dumps, serious emergencies have been prevented. By the end of this year, we plan to complete the most technically complicated project — at Tuyuk-Suu tailing dump in Min-Kush settlement. There was a high risk of radioactive substances getting into the environment due to the threat of a landslide. Now there is no such danger anymore,» the report quotes Vasily Tinin, Director for National Policy for Radioactive Waste, Spent Nuclear Fuel and Decommissioning at Rosatom State Corporation, as saying.
Rosatom is engaged in land rehabilitation in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan within the framework of the interstate target program ‘Reclamation of the territories of states affected by uranium mining operations’ signed in 2012. In 2024, the program will come to an end. In the future, work on bringing the sites to a nuclear and radiation safe condition will continue under new intergovernmental agreements.
In 2019, work on the conservation of the tailing dump near Kadzhi-Sai settlement was completed, and the facility was brought into compliance with radiation safety requirements. In 2023, rehabilitation of Kak tailing dump, liquidation of Taldy-Bulak tailing dump adjacent to the Min-Kush settlement was completed. Conservation works on Dalneye tailing dump and liquidation of Tuyuk-Suu tailing dump near Min-Kush settlement are in progress. The completion date is 2024.
