The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution demanding from Israel to withdraw its forces from the occupied Palestinian territories within 12 months. UN News website says.

At least 124 delegations, including Kyrgyzstan, voted for the resolution, proposed by the State of Palestine in collaboration with dozens of other countries. 43 countries abstained and 14 voted against.

The resolution demands the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Palestinian territories, an end to the construction of new settlements, the return of captured lands and property, and the possibility of the return of displaced Palestinians. The document, which is not binding, is based on the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, according to which the occupation since 1967 is «illegal.»

According to Deutsche Welle, the resolution was the first to be submitted by the Palestinian delegation since its rights in UN bodies were expanded in May 2024. Permanent Observer of Palestine to the UN Riyad Mansour said that the document’s goal is «to use the pressure of the international community in the General Assembly and the pressure of the historic decision of the International Court of Justice to force Israel to change its behavior.»

The media outlet notes that Israel has decisively rejected the resolution. Israel’s Permanent Representative to the UN Danny Danon called the vote «a shameful decision that supports the diplomatic terrorism of the Palestinian Authority.» «Instead of marking the anniversary of the October 7 massacre by condemning Hamas and calling for the release of all remaining hostages, the General Assembly continues to dance to the music of the Palestinian Authority, which supports the murderers from Hamas,» he said.

Recall, the Hamas movement carried out a large-scale attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. In response, Israel’s military-political cabinet approved the introduction of Clause 40 of the Basic Law, which constitutes an official declaration of war.
