Price of medicines to increase in Kyrgyzstan due to introduction of VAT

Price of medicines and medical products will increase in Kyrgyzstan. Asel Turdalieva, a specialist at the Ministry of Health reported.

According to her, in accordance with the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers, a value-added tax (VAT) on medicines and medical products has been introduced in the country. The document was signed on August 27, and accordingly, the previous resolution, according to which medicines and medical products were not subject to this type of tax, has been canceled.

The VAT rate is set at 12 percent of the taxable supply and taxable import, Asel Turdalieva explained. In this regard, a 12 percent increase in prices for medicines and medical products is expected.

Earlier, Almazbek Altybaev, Executive Director of the Pharmaceutical Union of the Kyrgyz Republic, said that if a value-added tax on medicines and medical products is introduced in the republic, their smuggling may increase to 60 percent. The price of medicines may also increase.

Price of some medicines has already significantly increased. For example, hypertensive patients told that if in the summer Aira 16 cost 600-700 soms, now it can be bought for no less than 1,100 soms.
