The third meeting of the Commission on the Common Alphabet of the Turkic World, established by the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), was held in Baku on September 9-11, 2024. As a result of the meeting, a draft of the Common Turkic Alphabet consisting of 34 letters was agreed upon. TRT reports.
The event was held in cooperation with the Turkic Academy and the Turkish Language Institute, with the participation of representatives of the member countries of the OTS. The main purpose of the meeting was to complete work on a single alphabet for the Turkic languages. The commission revised and updated the original 1991 draft to reflect modern needs.
«As a result of this dedicated work, agreement was reached on a proposal for a common Turkic alphabet consisting of 34 letters. Each letter in the proposed alphabet represents a different phoneme present in the Turkic languages,» the official statement says.
The Turkic Academy emphasized the historical importance of the event. «The development of a common Turkic alphabet promotes mutual understanding and cooperation between Turkic peoples while preserving their linguistic heritage,» the statement says.
The organizers expressed their gratitude to the governments of Turkic states and members of the commission for their contributions to the alphabet development process. All relevant institutions are now invited to actively support the introduction of the new Common Turkic Alphabet.
The Turkic Academy, which coordinated the project, is headquartered in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
