34 women die from domestic violence in Kyrgyzstan over the past 2.5 years

At least 34 women have died from domestic violence in Kyrgyzstan over the past 2.5 years. Radio Azattyk reported, citing the Prosecutor General’s Office of Kyrgyzstan.

According to the supervisory authority, nine tragic cases with fatal outcomes were registered in the first half of 2024. Last year, 18 Kyrgyz women became victims of domestic violence, and a year earlier — 17.

To date, Bishkek courts are considering two criminal cases on the facts of the brutal murder of women. The first concerns the death of Rakhima Aikymbaeva, who died at the hands of her ex-husband in early April. The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that they detained a 33-year-old suspect and opened a criminal case against him under the article «Murder with particular cruelty.»

The second case was opened on the fact of the death of 39-year-old Aizhan Alykulova. She died on the night of February 24 after being beaten. Her 34-year-old partner was arrested on suspicion of the crime.

In June, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kyrgyzstan reported an increase in the number of cases of domestic violence in the country. According to the ministry, 4,767 cases of domestic violence were registered in the first four months of 2024, which is 632 cases more than in the same period last year.

As noted, 1,363 reports have been drawn up since the beginning of the year and submitted to the judicial authorities for consideration under Article 70 («Domestic Violence») of the Code of Offenses of the Kyrgyz Republic. About 433 people were sentenced to community service, and 691 were taken into custody.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported earlier that the number of registered victims of domestic violence was 13,104 people at year-end 2023, at least 95 percent of them were women.
