Sweden confirms first case of monkeypox outside of Africa

A case of monkeypox (mpox) has been confirmed in Sweden, the first outside the African region, UN News reports.

According to the health authorities of Sweden, the infected person visited an area of ​​Africa, where the disease has been reported.

The infected person is undergoing treatment. Standard measures for such situations are being taken, including isolation of the patient and tracing contact people.

Swedish health authorities emphasize that while the threat to the general public remains low, vigilance is crucial.

The WHO declared the mpox outbreak in Africa a public health emergency of international concern the day before.

 Typical symptoms of mpox include:

  • A skin rash or lesions on the mucous membranes that can last 2-4 weeks;
  • Fever;
  • Headache;
  • Muscle and back pain;
  • Weakness and swollen lymph nodes.

People can get infected with mpox through physical contact with an infected person, contaminated objects, or infected animals.
