The Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Service for Combating Illegal Drug Trafficking of Kyrgyzstan commented on the information about heroin seized in Bulgaria from a trailer that allegedly came from Kyrgyzstan.

Earlier, Associated Press reported that law enforcement agencies of Bulgaria seized 436 kilograms of heroin, which was found in a cargo coming from the Kyrgyz Republic.

«The information was disseminated in the media and social media of the Kyrgyz Republic. However, this information was not sent by official state bodies of Bulgaria. The Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Service for Combating Illegal Drug Trafficking is carrying out relevant activities based on interstate agreements. It is currently known that the cargo arrived from Batumi; a detailed study and clarification of the data is underway. The leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs considers the seizure of drugs from illegal circulation as one of the priority areas. Work in this direction is being carried out at the proper level,» the statement says.

The heroin was stashed in 434 packages hidden inside officially declared cargo in a trailer. The drug haul’s value is estimated at €35 million.

As reported, the trailer had arrived at the end of July on a land route from Kyrgyzstan to the Georgian Black Sea port of Batumi, from where it crossed to Burgas.

From Bulgaria, it was supposed to continue to Alexandroupolis in Greece.

The trailer, supposedly transporting cable-laying machines, raised suspicion due to its unusually long stay at the port, anti-drug unit chief Ivan Sokolov told reporters, adding that an X-ray inspection led to the discovery of the concealed heroin.

«So far, there have been no arrests, and no persons found involved in this cross-border crime,» district prosecutor Georgi Chinev said.
